NSW public service roles use the capability framework maintained by the Public Service Commission. The groups are Personal Attributes, Relationships, Results and Business Enablers. Roles that manage people also use People Management. The advertisement names the focus capabilities and the level. Administrative work sits on the clerk scale: Clerk Grade 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12. Senior executives are advertised at Band 1, Band 2 and Band 3.

A Grade 3/4 role in a regional office is scored for accurate work inside a procedure. A Grade 5/6 or 7/8 role in a Hunter program is scored for a caseload, a project or a relationship you owned. Grade 9/10 and 11/12 roles are read for advice, resources and a function. A Band application is short and is read for an agency outcome. Relabelling a Grade 7/8 letter as a Grade 11/12 letter does not change the size of the example.

Health roles inside Hunter New England often sit on health awards rather than the clerk scale. Nursing, medical, allied health and health-manager advertisements name the award stream. Corporate roles in performance, finance, capital or patient administration can still be clerk-graded and still use focus capabilities. Read the advertisement before you pick the document. Federal APS roles based in Newcastle, including service delivery, use APSJobs and the Integrated Leadership System, which is a different set of labels.

Hunter New England Local Health District covers Newcastle and a much wider region. John Hunter Hospital at New Lambton Heights is the principal tertiary referral hospital, and John Hunter Children's Hospital sits on the same campus. Calvary Mater Newcastle provides public hospital services, including cancer and emergency care. Belmont Hospital and the newer Maitland Hospital are other public hospitals people in this labour market name on a résumé. The Hunter Medical Research Institute works beside the John Hunter campus.

A clinical application needs the hospital, the unit, registration where the role requires it, and an example a nurse unit manager or a medical lead will recognise. An emergency résumé and a theatre résumé from the same campus are not interchangeable. Community and rural sites in the same district need the setting named as well. A line that only says 'tertiary hospital, Hunter' makes the panel guess the acuity.

Corporate and clinical-support roles in the district are still health-sector applications. They should show the service, the volume and the constraint, not a generic administration profile with a hospital name pasted on. University of Newcastle clinical schools and conjoint appointments are a further reader: the faculty and the health service do not score the same first page.

RAAF Base Williamtown, north of Newcastle, is the home of Air Combat Group. Aerospace and defence sustainment employers, including BAE Systems Australia, recruit technicians, engineers, planners and supply staff for work that supports that base. A defence-industry résumé leads with the platform or the trade, the authorisation you held, and the outcome on the aircraft or the fleet. It does not open with NSW capability headings. Civilian APS roles inside Defence are a third document again, lodged through APSJobs.

The Port of Newcastle is the trade gateway for the Hunter, including coal export and other cargo. Stevedoring, port operations, logistics and the mining-services firms that support Hunter Valley coal operations recruit from Newcastle. A site or port résumé needs the operation, the roster or the shift pattern, the crew or the cargo, the tickets, and the shutdown or the incident you were part of. A clerk-grade letter about stakeholder engagement will not pass a supervisor's screen for a plant or a wharf role.

The University of Newcastle at Callaghan, and its city campus, recruits professional staff and academics. The CSIRO Energy Centre at Newcastle recruits scientific and technical staff. University and research applications ask for the discipline, the grant or the service, and the outcome in that institution's own form. They are not iworkfor.nsw.gov.au letters with the employer swapped.

An iworkfor.nsw.gov.au vacancy with a Newcastle location usually asks for a résumé and a cover letter, often around two pages, written to the focus capabilities. Some vacancies use targeted questions. Some still list requirements that have to be met before capabilities are scored. The advertisement also sets the closing time and which account the lodgement uses. Write to the capabilities on that Hunter role description. A letter that repeats the capability title and then lists duties gives the panel nothing new to score.

A one-page APS pitch is a different shape. It uses Integrated Leadership System labels and the length on the APSJobs advertisement. Sending that pitch to a NSW panel, or sending a Hunter focus-capability letter to an APS panel, fails the instruction before the examples are compared. If you are applying the same week for a Williamtown contractor role, that résumé should not carry capability headings at all.

The classification system is the state's. The location and the program on the advertisement are what the panel expects to see in the example.
