The NSW Public Sector Capability Framework is the language of iworkfor.nsw.gov.au. Personal Attributes, Relationships, Results and Business Enablers are the groups. People Management is added when the role manages staff. The role description names a handful of focus capabilities. Answer those. Pasting every capability into a Wollongong letter wastes the page the panel actually scores.

Clerk grades run 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12, then Senior Executive Band 1, Band 2 and Band 3. In the Illawarra, lower grades are often service-delivery and processing roles in a regional office. Middle grades own a caseload in housing, community services, education support, planning or transport. Upper grades are read for advice to a director and for the resources of a local function. A Band role is uncommon outside a larger agency and is read for judgement, not for a task list.

Illawarra Shoalhaven clinical roles use NSW Health awards. A registered nurse, a midwife or an allied-health professional is not a Clerk Grade 5/6 with clinical nouns added. Registration, the hospital and the unit belong on the clinical document. Corporate roles inside the district can still be clerk-graded. Federal jobs in the Illawarra, such as Services Australia, are APS classifications on APSJobs.

Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District runs Wollongong Hospital, the major referral hospital, and Shellharbour Hospital, plus Shoalhaven Memorial Hospital further south. Wollongong Hospital is where the higher-acuity medical, surgical, emergency and maternity work sits. Shellharbour takes a different mix. Naming only 'Illawarra health' hides which campus, and the panel works on a campus.

Clinical résumés need the stream and the scope: emergency presentations, a ward specialty, theatres, community nursing, or medical imaging. Allied health needs the profession and the caseload. New graduate and transition programs ask for placement evidence, not a ten-year management profile. Senior clinical roles are read for the team you ran and the standard you held, still inside the award the advertisement names.

Health corporate work in the district, in rostering, health information, finance, capital and community partnerships, follows the focus capabilities when the vacancy says so. Those examples should still show the hospital or the community service they sat in. A Sydney corporate example with no Illawarra service is a weak match for a local panel.

BlueScope Steel's Port Kembla steelworks is the industrial employer the city is known for. Production, maintenance, engineering, safety and commercial roles are read for the plant area, the crew, the shutdown and the standard. Tickets, confinements and the part of the process you worked matter more than a profile paragraph about being passionate about steel. Contractors on site need the package and the client named, not a stack of labour-hire logos with no scope.

Port Kembla is also a working port. The Port Kembla Coal Terminal, grain and other trades, and NSW Ports operations recruit operations, maintenance and commercial staff. A port résumé leads with cargo, equipment, shift and the incident or the throughput you were accountable for. It is closer to an industrial résumé than to a public sector letter.

The University of Wollongong recruits professional staff and academics across Wollongong and its other campuses. Professional roles want the service, the system and the result. Academic roles want teaching, research or engagement in the faculty's own format. TAFE NSW Illawarra is a separate public education employer. None of these is an iworkfor.nsw.gov.au statement with the logo changed.

NSW selection for a Wollongong vacancy is usually a focus-capability letter or targeted questions, plus a résumé. Some advertisements still say selection criteria. When they do, answer the criteria they list. When they name four focus capabilities and a two-page letter, the letter is the selection document. Five long STAR essays written for an older criterion style overrun the limit and repeat the résumé.

An APS one-page pitch does not belong on that NSW vacancy. The pitch is for APSJobs, against the Integrated Leadership System, at the length the federal ad sets. If you are applying for a federal service-delivery role in Wollongong and an NSW regional role in the same month, keep two applications. The employment history can overlap. The labels, the length and the reader cannot.

Private employers at the steelworks, the port and the university rarely want either public sector document. They want a résumé a supervisor or a hiring manager can scan for scope. Keep the capability letter off that file.
