Western Australian public sector jobs are advertised at specified calling or general levels, commonly Level 1 through Level 8, and then at Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 and Class 4 for senior executive and leadership roles. Level 1 and Level 2 work is supervised. Level 3 and Level 4 work owns a caseload or a technical task. Level 5 and Level 6 work is where panels look for advice, a project or a team. Level 7 and Level 8 work leads a function. Class roles are read for an agency outcome, a budget and relationships outside the branch.

The Public Sector Commission publishes capability profiles. The job description form and the advertisement still set the essential criteria for that vacancy.

Health, education, police and some technical callings use their own awards on top of, or instead of, the general level. A clinical nurse or a medical role in WA Health is not a Level 5 policy officer. Read the specified calling on the advertisement. Public hospitals are grouped in health service providers. Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Perth Children's Hospital sit in the north metropolitan service. Royal Perth Hospital and Armadale Hospital are in the east metropolitan service. Fiona Stanley Hospital is in the south metropolitan service. King Edward Memorial Hospital is the women's hospital. Clinical applications need AHPRA registration where the role requires it, the unit, and examples from that scope. Corporate roles inside the Department of Health or a health service can still be Level-classified and still use the capability profile.

Name the hospital the advertisement names. A résumé that says 'tertiary hospital, Perth' and never says whether the work was at Royal Perth, Fiona Stanley or Sir Charles Gairdner makes the panel guess the acuity and the team.

State vacancies are listed on jobs.wa.gov.au. The advertisement attaches a job description form. That form carries the essential criteria, and often desirable criteria, plus the capabilities the agency cares about. Many WA roles still expect a written response to the essential criteria, with a length set in the ad, plus a résumé. Some ads have moved to a shorter statement or to questions on the application form. The form you are given is the instruction.

Answer the essential criteria with examples at the level. A criterion about communication is scored on a real piece of advice or a real handover, not on a sentence that says you communicate well. Keep the résumé factual: employers, dates, the level if you have held a WA public sector job, and the systems. Do not hide the criteria answers inside the résumé and leave the attachment blank.

A WA public sector criteria response is written for a panel that has to score each essential point. A FIFO résumé is written for a recruiter who is matching tickets, medicals, a roster and a site. BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue and Roy Hill recruit iron ore roles from Perth for Pilbara operations. Woodside and Chevron recruit LNG and upstream roles with corporate offices in Perth. Gold producers and mining-services firms recruit the same way. The résumé needs the site or the operation, the roster, the crew or the package, the tickets, and the incident or the shutdown you were part of.

Labour-hire language is a common way these résumés get filed as helper roles. If you ran the crew, say the crew. If you held the permit, say the permit. If the last two years were shutdowns, put the shutdowns on the first page. A six-page duty list is harder to place than two pages that name the work.

When the vacancy is a Level 6 role in a resources department, use the criteria and the capability profile. When the vacancy is a supervisor on a Pilbara roster, use the FIFO résumé. Applicants who send the site résumé to jobs.wa.gov.au, or the criteria booklet to a labour-hire desk, are answering a process they were not given.
