The administrative stream in the South Australian public sector runs Administrative Services Officer ASO1 through ASO8. ASO1 and ASO2 work follows set procedures. ASO3 and ASO4 work adds judgement inside a team and a broader knowledge of the agency. ASO5 and ASO6 work is where position descriptions look for discipline knowledge, advice and carriage of a program. ASO7 and ASO8 work plans how an agency function will be delivered, often with staff and a budget. The classification standards in Determination 5 describe those work levels. Write to the level on the position description, not to the level you hope the panel will infer.

Management Administrative Services, or MAS, is the stream for people accountable for a major agency function or a series of significant functions. It is not a synonym for a senior ASO title. Operational Services, Professional Officer, Technical Officer and Allied Health Professional streams use their own standards. A clinician and an ASO6 policy officer in the same department are not interchangeable on paper.

The South Australian Executive Service, SAES, sits above those streams. SAES applications are read for leadership of an outcome, for relationships with ministers and with other agencies, and for the resources in the role. They are shorter than an ASO criteria pack. An ASO8 response with the heading changed to SAES still reads as an ASO8 response.

Older competency frameworks, including entry-level and middle-manager sets, still appear in some agency material. The document that binds the vacancy is the position description on iworkfor.sa.gov.au and the capabilities or essential requirements it lists. If those requirements talk about communication, teamwork and work health and safety, answer those. If they talk about a program outcome at ASO7, answer that.

Departments that advertise Adelaide roles include the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, the Department of Treasury and Finance, the Department for Health and Wellbeing, the Department for Education, the Department of Human Services, and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport. South Australia Police is a separate workforce with its own entry and promotional processes. Use the agency name printed on the advertisement. Machinery-of-government changes rename portfolios, and the live ad wins.

SA Health's metropolitan hospitals include the Royal Adelaide Hospital, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Lyell McEwin Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre, and the Women's and Children's Hospital. The Royal Adelaide and The Queen Elizabeth sit with the Central Adelaide network. Lyell McEwin sits in the north. Flinders Medical Centre sits in the south. Clinical applications need AHPRA registration where the role requires it, the unit, and examples from that hospital's acuity. Corporate and allied health roles follow the stream on the position description. SAHMRI and the universities, the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia and Flinders University, recruit research and professional staff on their own forms.

Defence industry is the other Adelaide-specific reader. Naval shipbuilding at Osborne involves ASC and BAE Systems Maritime Australia, among other contractors, on surface ships and on submarine work. RAAF Base Edinburgh and Defence Science and Technology Group employ and contract people in the north of the city. A defence-industry résumé needs the program, the standard, the trade or the engineering discipline, and the clearance level you actually hold. It does not need a claim about a headcount you cannot verify. A public sector application for Defence SA or for an infrastructure role that touches the precinct still uses the SA classification, not a shipyard duty list.

South Australian Government vacancies are advertised on iworkfor.sa.gov.au. The position description states the classification, the stream, the essential requirements and how to apply. Many roles still ask for a résumé and a response to the key capabilities or essential criteria, with a length in the ad. Some use questions on the application form. Lodge what that advertisement asks for, in the file type it allows, before the closing time.

The response has to be scoreable. A capability called 'stakeholder engagement' is demonstrated by a piece of work with a named kind of stakeholder and a result, at the ASO level of the role. Restating the capability in different words gives the panel nothing to mark. The résumé then lists employers, dates, qualifications and systems so the response can spend its words on the examples.

South Australian public sector selection is still, on many vacancies, a criteria or capability response. It is not an APS one-page pitch unless you are answering a federal advertisement. Federal roles in Adelaide, including Defence civilian roles, are on APSJobs and use APS classifications. Write the pitch or the criteria that APS ad sets, and keep it off the SA Government file.

A hospital résumé and a shipyard résumé fail in different ways. The hospital file that never names the unit, the ratio or the clinical system is hard to roster against. The shipyard file that never names the program, the drawing, the weld, the system or the clearance reads as a generic trade history. Neither file should open with a paragraph of ASO capability headings.
